Sustainable Building Design

Once a long time ago, we used to live in healthy places that didn’t really harm the environment – but this all changed with modern cities – but we’ve only started realising it. So Sustainable Building Design is a whole new area that is continually changing and evolving and we find the whole thing a bit confusing! But we know that there are a few really important things so for the moment we’ve focused on these:

  • Almost everything in our restaurants are made from recycled materials.
  • We only use VOC free paint which means no toxicity so you really can breathe easy whilst enjoying your meal! In fact, we make sure all our indoor air is high quality – like everything else at Otarian – because we know how important good breathing is.
  • Otarian restaurants use existing buildings which are located near to public transport and fit in nicely with the surrounding neighbourhood and buildings. We want to our restaurants to belong to the places they operate in and to enhance the spaces they occupy.
  • Greenhouse gases are a major concern for the world’s climate so our restaurants all use processes, materials and equipment that reduce the use of gas and electricity and use renewable energy sources.
  • We care about water and make sure we always use it as efficiently as possible. We’ve installed lots of technology to help us save water.
  • All our buildings use materials that require less water, energy, toxic chemicals and cleaning to maintain. This all just makes good environmental and economic sense. And our cleaners are happier too!
