No-one wants to live in a world without water. In fact we couldn’t. Water is such a precious global environmental resource.

Yet a typical restaurant uses up to 1 million litres of water a year! That’s a huge amount of water.  In the US the average person uses 378 litres of water per day; in the UK it is 148 litres per day.   So between 7 and 18 years worth of a typical person’s use of water is used in just 1 year.  At Otarian, we minimise our water use across all of our operations.

We keep a close eye on our water use and have equipment to help us use as little as possible. We make sure all our equipment and appliances are always working properly because as much as a third of all water can be lost through leaking pipes! Everyone who works at Otarian cares about water and across all operations everyone is water wise. Our restaurants, kitchens and offices are water wise buildings too. Because we all live on the same planet – so what’s good for the planet is good for everyone and everything!

Of course, offering a vegetarian menu also conserves a huge amount of water because livestock use about 8% of our global freshwater supply (which might sound fine if you live in a wet place – but isn’t so fine when you realise that many countries and cities are starting to run out of water – including places where livestock are farmed!).

The water needed to produce the meat from just one beef cattle is about 5 million litres.  That’s enough to fill 2 Olympic swimming pools! So Otarian food is a tasty, filling way to save water and still enjoy your hot showers.
